They’re currently making hundreds of protective face masks and distributing them to high-risk groups in our greater Boston community. The current priority is to help our local frontline heroes by providing PPE that is validated for medical settings and to share clear information with individuals and facilities that wish to help.
They’ve reached the initial goal of 1000 masks in April, so they’ve upped their goal to 3000! To donate towards the cost of materials, click here.

TypeCon Philadelphia Postponed to 2021
Given the state of the pandemic globally, we’ve decided to postpone this year’s conference in Philadelphia until August 16th – 22nd, 2021.
See the official announcement for details.
(Visit TypeCon for original post and following updates).
We’d like to thank everyone for your support of TypeCon through the years — it’s your participation that makes TypeCon as vibrant and energetic as it is.
TypeCon is produced by a non-profit organization focused on the type and lettering community. Making decisions that benefit our whole community is of the utmost importance to us.
Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in the world that has our attention and we have been taking the necessary time not to make any missteps. The time spent in recent months quietly behind the scenes has been centered around renegotiating our hotel contract and setting new dates and expectations for the content we can deliver this year, as well as our goals to see each other in 2021.
Given the state of the pandemic globally, we’ve decided to postpone this year’s conference in Philadelphia until August 16th – 22nd, 2021. An overwhelming number of reasons led us to this decision, but a couple stood out:
Our responsibility to you and everyone’s health — physical and emotional. We asked ourselves over and over if we could be putting people’s health on the line, would the sheer stress of traveling and the concerns of exposure be worth selfishly having a conference that could compromise anyone? (The answer for us is obvious.)
We felt that current and potential travel restrictions would likely hinder a large group of our typographic community from attending TypeCon. It is all of us together that makes TypeCon special. As such, we’ve made the decision to hold the physical conference until a time where the typographic community’s access to the event is not limited by geography.
We will continue to explore options and formats for delivering informative, fun, and engaging content this year, while we look forward to seeing all of you at TypeCon2021 in Philadelphia. Keep following us on our social media channels to keep up with what we do have in store for the remainder of this year.
Again, thank you for supporting TypeCon.
BSDS Thursday Night Films
With the ongoing social distancing efforts happening in our communities (and around the world), people are looking for ways to spend time together, even when while physically apart. To help fill that gap, I’ve been organizing weekly joint viewings of movies using Netflix Party for members of the design group, BSDS.

How Netlix Pary works:
Netflix Party is a plugin for Chrome-based web browsers for people to coordinate and chat about a movie at the same. Participants can pause and restart the film so everyone is watching it from the same point. Members give suggestions for movies to watch and each Thursday, links are posted in the BSDS slack group for people to join the coordinated viewing.

What is BSDS?
Bay State Design Shop (“BSDS”) is a growing community that’s for New England-area designers, by New England-area designers. Our Slack channel is an inclusive gathering spot for all stripes of designer—veteran practitioners, up-and-comers, and greenhorns alike—we’re an egalitarian, pretension-free place for designers to talk shop, chew the fat, and lend each other a helping hand. Think of Bay State Design Shop as a lively potluck dinner that everybody’s invited to.
We’re a place for designers to ask questions, share insights into their work, offer constructive, real-time critique—as well as get a heads up on job opportunities, resources, and events in the area. Rest easy though, friend; we take our work seriously, but not ourselves. Be assured there’s a heaping portion of malarkey served up daily in our scrappy design clubhouse.
Founded in 2017 by designers Ryan Arruda & Erik Weikert, Bay State Design Shop has grown organically over the last year, and is proud to have over 300 members amongst its roster. You know what, though? It’d be an even better place if you joined too.
So hold onto your hats, folks—you had BEST BELIEVE™ that the Bay State Design Shop is ready to welcome you to its ranks. So, what do you say? If you’re a New England-area designer, come pull up a chair and sit a spell. The conversation is good, the people are genuine, and the snacks are free.
